Linux refers to the family of Unix-like computer operating systems using the Linux kernel.Linux is predominantly known for its use in servers.Desktop use of Linux has become increasingly popular in recent years, partly owing to the popular Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, and openSUSE.

DEVELOPMENT:-
The primary difference between Linux and many other popular contemporary operating systems is that the Linux kernel and other components are free and open source software. Linux is not the only such operating system, although it is by far the most widely used.

PROGRAMMING ON LINUX:-
Most Linux distributions support dozens of programming languages.The most common collection of utilities for building both Linux applications and operating system programs is found within the GNU toolchain.
Most distributions also include support for PHP, Perl, Ruby, Python and other dynamic languages.A number of Java Virtual Machines and development kits run on Linux, including the original Sun Microsystems .

USES OF LINUX:-
Linux distributions have long been used as server operating systems, and have risen to prominence in that area.Eight of the ten most reliable internet hosting companies ran Linux distributions on their web servers.Linux has achieved popularity among developers, and which is one of the more common platforms for website hosting.Linux has become increasingly popular on mainframes in the last decade due to pricing, compared to other mainframe operating systems.

LINUX BASED OPERATING SYSTEMS:-
Ubuntu is a computer operating system based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution and is distributed as free and open source software with additional proprietary software.

FEATURES OF UBUNTU:-
Ubuntu focuses on usability.The Ubiquity installer allows Ubuntu to be installed to the hard disk from within the Live CD environment, without the need for restarting the computer prior to installation. Ubuntu also emphasizes accessibility and internationalization to reach as many people as possible.Ubuntu comes installed with a wide range of software that includes OpenOffice.org, Firefox, Empathy and Pidgin.
